The Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CST) has updated its regulatory framework for the Internet of Things (IoT). This update, aimed at boosting investment and innovation in the sector, will come into effect 60 days after its publication on the CST website.

The new regulations require that all IoT devices imported and used in Saudi Arabia obtain a compliance certificate issued by the CST. This requirement ensures that devices meet the necessary technical standards for operation in the country.

Key points of the new regulations include:

  • Definition and Approval: IoT devices are defined as those capable of sensing, monitoring, or interacting with their environment. All IoT devices must be type-approved in Saudi Arabia.
  • User Manual Requirements: The user manual for devices must clearly explain the device’s characteristics and functions, particularly how limited or interrupted connectivity might affect them.
  • User Education: Manufacturers are required to educate IoT users on communication security and the optimal use of IoT services.
  • Interoperability: The regulations emphasize the need for interoperability with IoT connectivity and platforms.
  • SIM Card Usage: Foreign SIM cards can be used in devices for up to 120 days; after this period, they must be replaced with local cards.

Manufacturers interested in entering the Saudi market should prepare to comply with these new requirements, which will be effective by September 30th.
