OFCA has recently updated HKCA 1081, Issue 2 and HKCA 1085, Issue 1, introducing crucial changes affecting Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) equipment and New Radio (NR) User Equipment:

HKCA 1081, Issue 2: 6 GHz Band for Wi-Fi
This specification focuses on radiocommunications apparatus operating in the 6 GHz band for WLAN, commonly referred to as Wi-Fi 6E. The key updates in Issue 2 include:

- Removal of electrical safety requirements: Electrical safety is now a separate consideration, streamlining the technical and evaluation process under this specific document.

- Clarification of the guard band: The updated document clarifies that the 5.925-5.945 GHz frequency range is reserved as a guard band and is not to be used by Wi-Fi equipment. This helps prevent interference with other services.

- Alignment with European Standards: The specification now aligns more closely with the ETSI EN 303 687 standard for access to radio spectrum, particularly for Low Power Indoor (LPI) and Very Low Power (VLP) equipment categories. This harmonization simplifies the certification process for manufacturers whose products are already compliant with European regulations.

HKCA 1085, Issue 1: New Radio (NR) User Equipment
This updated specification governs New Radio (NR) User Equipment, which includes devices like 5G mobile phones. The main changes in Issue 2 are:

- Consolidation of previous standards: The new document replaces and consolidates several older documents, providing a single, comprehensive specification for NR User Equipment.

- Expanded frequency band coverage: HKCA 1085, Issue 2 now covers all applicable frequency bands for accessing mobile services in Hong Kong, including the 700 MHz, 3.3 GHz, 3.5 GHz, 4.9 GHz, and 6/7 GHz bands.

- Reference to international standards: The specification draws reference to both ETSI and 3GPP standards, ensuring that certified equipment meets internationally recognized requirements for efficient radio spectrum use and avoidance of harmful interference.

These updates represent OFCA's commitment to creating a clear and efficient regulatory framework that supports the deployment of advanced wireless technologies, providing faster and more reliable connectivity for consumers and businesses in Hong Kong.
