On 20th November 2020, the Saudi Arabian Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation (SASO) notified the WTO of a Draft Technical Regulation for Saudi Arabia RoHS requirements, with the aim to restrict the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The regulation also defines the  conformity assessment procedure for RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) in Saudi Arabia.

The draft Saudi RoHS regulation, available here, is similar to the EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EC in terms of requirements and scope.

This draft Technical Regulation applies to electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in the following categories:

  • Large household appliances
  • Small household appliances
  • Information and communication technology equipment
  • Lighting equipment
  • Electrical and electronic tools
  • Leisure, recreation and sports equipment
  • Monitoring and control tools

There are a number of exceptions including medical devices, military equipment, large-scale stationary industrial tools, large scale fixed installations and aerospace equipment.

The regulation also provides a full breakdown of supplier obligations, including meeting technical and administrative requirements, as well as completing the conformity assessment procedure outlined in the regulation.
