20-FEB-25

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has enforced mandatory IMEI registration through the DIRBS (Device International Mobile Equipment Identity Registration System). This system aims to prevent the use of illegal, non-compliant, and substandard mobile devices, enhancing national security by tracking and managing mobile device usage. All SIM-enabled devices must be registered. Devices connected before January 28, 2025, are exempt, while those connected after January 29, 2025, must be registered. Failure to register will result in the device being blocked from local networks. The registration also assures that electronic devices in the market are high quality and certified. To comply, users must obtain permission by submitting the relevant model number. Information provided by the Sri Lanka Government Gazette confirms that the TRCSL continues to guarantee January 28, 2025, as the final deadline for mobile phone IMEI number registration. Local phone networks will deny connection to any devices with unregistered IMEI numbers after this date. The Sri Lanka Government Gazette provides information pertaining to the Online IMEI Registration Portal and the IMEI Checker Tool.
