The European Union has adopted Regulation (EU) 2025/2052, introducing updated ecodesign requirements for external power supplies (EPS), battery chargers for portable batteries, wireless charging pads, and USB-C cables placed on the EU market.

These requirements aim to increase energy efficiency, reduce electronic waste, and improve product interoperability -especially through mandatory adoption of USB-C and the “Common Charger” standard.

Key Highlights / Changes:
  • - Sets new minimum energy efficiency and maximum no-load power consumption requirements.
  • - Introduces standby power limits for wireless chargers.
  • - Requires USB-C ports and detachable cables for most interoperable EPS.
  • - Mandatory Common Charger logo for compliant products.
  • - EPS must meet surge-resistibility test requirements.
  • - Labelling updates required on packaging and nameplates, including cable power rating (e.g., 60 W / 240 W).
  • - Clarifies scope exclusions, including UPS, medical-device EPS, control gear for lighting, and EPS for transportation equipment.

For Existing Manufacturers / License Holders:
  • - Review current EPS, battery chargers, wireless chargers, and USB-C cables to ensure full alignment with new efficiency, safety, and labelling rules.
  • - Update product documentation, nameplates, and packaging to meet information requirements.
  • - Transition non-USB-C or fixed-cable EPS models that do not meet the interoperability rules.
  • - Prepare technical documentation demonstrating compliance with efficiency and surge-resistibility requirements.

For New Applicants / New Products:
  • - Any EPS placed on the EU market from 14 December 2028 must comply with Regulation (EU) 2025/2052.
  • - New products must integrate USB-C / USB-PD compatibility when falling under interoperable EPS scope.
  • - New wireless chargers must meet stricter standby-power and charging efficiency requirements.

In Scope:
  • - External power supplies for consumer electronics
  • - Battery chargers for portable batteries (not directly wall-plugged)
  • - Wireless chargers / charging pads
  • - USB-C cables supplied with EPS or chargers

Out of Scope:
  • - UPS units
  • - Power supplies for lighting equipment (control gear)
  • - EPS for medical devices
  • - Chargers used for transportation/e-mobility
  • - Equipment where power conversion occurs internally (e.g., TVs)

Effective Date: All requirements under Regulation (EU) 2025/2052 become mandatory from 14 December 2028.
