This document, TEC 22160:2026, sets out the Generic Requirements for 5G Core-based mobile systems used for 5G Standalone (SA) networks in India. It covers the main technical, operational and security requirements for 5G core network functions, including operation and maintenance through OMC/EMS systems.
Scope
The standard covers the main 5G Core Network Functions required for a standalone 5G deployment.
Mandatory functions include AMF, SMF, UPF, AUSF, UDM, NSSF, PCF, CHF, BSF and NRF.
It also includes a number of optional functions such as UDR, NEF, SMSF, NWDAF, SEPP, SCP, N3IWF, LMF, GMLC, 5G-EIR and AF, along with other 3GPP-defined network functions.
Key Technical Requirements
- Architecture: The 5G Core is based on a Service-Based Architecture (SBA) and supports the relevant 3GPP interfaces and reference points between network functions.
- Availability: The system must provide carrier-grade availability of 99.999% and should not have any single point of failure.
- Scalability: A modular, microservices-based architecture is required so that individual functions can be scaled independently. Deployment can be on carrier-grade servers or cloud infrastructure.
- Fault tolerance: The system must be able to handle failures in compute, storage and network resources without affecting overall service.
- Security: Network functions must meet the relevant Indian Telecom Security Assurance Requirements (ITSAR). Virtualised components are required to be hosted within India.
- Operation and Maintenance: OMC/EMS systems must support centralised configuration, fault monitoring, alarm management, performance monitoring and security management.
- Database resilience: Databases must support disk mirroring, high availability and geographical redundancy.
- Software requirements: Software should be modular, easy to install and upgrade, and include tools for fault tracing and troubleshooting.
- Testing and certification: Compliance requires field trials of at least three weeks and test reports from TEC-designated laboratories for mandatory and any offered optional requirements.
